Tim Ho Wan must be the Cheapest Michelin Star Restaurant! They have 2 outlets in Singapore, one at Plaza Singapura and the other, newly opened at Toa Payoh!
If you are there, be sure to try their famous FOUR HEAVENLY KINGS: Steamed Egg Cake, Vermicelli Roll with Pig’s Liver, Baked Bun with BBQ pork and Pan Fried Carrot Cake. Check out my reviews of them here!
So anyway, I’m back again this time to check them out at their newest outlet yet – Toa Payoh ERA Building! With the opening of this new outlet, Chef Mak Kwai Pui has got on the bandwagon of the local culture in Singapore and he is adding 6 new dishs to the menu. These are monthly specials that will change every few months.
People in Hong Kong, they like the original, traditional Dim Sum dishes. Here in Singapore, we appreciate those AND crave for new stuff all the time too.
Here are some of my personal favourite MUST EATS at Tim Ho Wan!
#1: Congee with Lean Pork, Century Egg & Salted Egg: $4.20
MUST TRY! I LOVE THIS DISH. In fact, I’ll even go as far as to risk sounding like a noob and say this must be one of the best Lean Pork, Century Egg & Salted Egg Congee that I have ever eaten. The texture of the porridge is super smooth & creamy – just like how Hong Kong Congees are. Every spoonful gives you an excellent proportion of ingredients versus congee. Don’t miss this ok!
#2: Wasabi Salad Prawn Dumpling: $5.00 for 4 pcs
I don’t like fried stuff. I don’t even eat fried Dim Sum when I go to Dim Sum places. But because I was here and this dish was one of their EXCLUSIVE dishes to their new Toa Payoh outlet, I decided to give it a go. Plus, the drizzle of wasabi sauce & egg roe on top looked pretty appetising.
Take my money already! The outside is CRIPSY and surprisingly not oily. When you bite in, the prawn taste bursts in your outh and it’s succulent and very juicy. I could have done with more wasabi cos the sauce wasn’t too wasabi-like too. It is a perfect marriage this Wasabi Prawn Dumpling.
#3: Baked Bun with BBQ Pork: $4.50 for 3 pcs
Sweet crispy crusted baked exterior that breaks into a flavourful warm char siew that oozes out. I have mentioned how much I love this and that I’ll definitely be back to eat this and that still holds true. Besides, this is one BBQ Pork bun that does not have too much fatty meat in there! Definitely worth coming back for.
One more picture for the road:
#4: Mango Pomelo Sago: $5.00
Please try this! It is kinda pricey but this is another dish I would totally order again. It’s not too sweet or too watery as most other similar desserts tend to be. The mango taste is strong and superb. It’s mixed in with chunks of mango, pomelo and sago which gives this dessert the texture and sweetness one would expect.
#5: Pan Fried Carrot Cake: $4.50 for 3 pcs
Pan fried to crispy perfection on the outside, soft and delicious on the inside. This unique carrot cake comes packed with radish and, surprise surprise, bits of dried cuttle fish too! This is a humble dish made awesome.
